PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Your Safety is Our Priority

Residents of Satellite Beach with disabilities or access and functional needs are strongly encouraged to plan ahead for hurricanes and other disasters. The City and Brevard County offer resources and support to help ensure everyone stays safe during emergencies.

Personal Preparedness Checklist

  • Create a personal emergency plan
  • Build a 7-day emergency supply kit
  • Label all medical equipment clearly
  • Keep a written list of medications, allergies, and emergency contacts
  • Talk to your support network about your evacuation or shelter plans
  • Ensure mobility devices have backup power or manual alternatives

Register with the Special Needs Shelter Program

Brevard County operates Special Needs Shelters during hurricanes and disasters for residents who:

  • Are electrically dependent (oxygen, feeding pumps, etc.)
  • Require minimal medical care
  • Have no other safe sheltering option

Register here (before hurricane season):
321-637-6670 (Brevard Emergency Management)

What to Bring to a Special Needs Shelter

  • Personal medications and copies of prescriptions
  • Medical equipment and chargers
  • Food, water, and snacks for 72 hours
  • Clothing, pillow, and blanket
  • Important documents in a waterproof bag
  • Contact list of doctors, caregivers, and family

Transportation is available for registered individuals who cannot evacuate on their own. Sign up in advance.

Service Animals

Service animals are allowed in all public shelters, including Special Needs Shelters. Be sure to:

  • Bring food, medications, and identification for your animal
  • Keep them on a leash or in a carrier when possible
  • Carry documentation if needed (ADA does not require certification but helpful if questions arise)
